Vibrations caused by construction equipment on site are transmitted to the adjacent properties. Various effects of these transmitted vibrations need to be considered.

(i) Depending on soil and other site conditions, these vibrations may cause settlement of the adjacent buildings. Consider a jar filled with loosely packed gravel. Vibrating this jar will lead to the settlement of the gravel in the jar. This settlement will reduce considerably and may even stop after a while when the gravel is quite densely packed.

(ii) There is a certain level of vibrations beyond which vibrations cause discomfort to human beings. These threshold levels are known and have been determined after years of experimentation. Vibrations due to construction must not exceed these thresholds to make sure neighbors are not subject to discomfort.

(iii) Damage other than structural, such as that caused by falling utensils and other artifacts, due to vibrations may also result.
